Quebec-raised poulet, s’il vous plait! Walmart Canada introduces Quebec-raised chicken in its Quebec Supercentres

Oct. 16, 2024

Quebecers are clucking at the news that Walmart Canada has transitioned the majority of its fresh chicken in its Quebec’s 61 Supercentres to a locally-raised option from local supplier Olymel. This change, representing millions of pounds of chicken sold annually, reinforces Walmart Canada’s ongoing support for local Quebec suppliers and farmers and the retailer’s commitment to providing high-quality, fresh, delicious meat options for local customers.

Walmart Canada began offering fresh Quebec-raised pork and fresh Quebec-raised beef in Supercentres provincewide in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

“Introducing fresh Quebec-raised chicken is the latest in a series of changes to our protein offering in Quebec towards locally-raised options,” shared Cyrille Ballereau, VP, Walmart Canada. “Walmart Canada is proud to work with nearly 2,000 Canadian suppliers, including more than 480 that are based here in Quebec. Our stores in the province now feature Quebec-raised chicken, pork and beef and I couldn’t be prouder of the work our teams are doing to support our local Quebecois farmers and bring Quebecers the local products they’re looking for.”

“Olymel is proud to introduce our new line of fresh chicken products at Walmart. This introduction follows the successful launch of our fresh pork products under the Olymel brand back in 2021,” says Daniel Rivest, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Olymel. “This line meets our customer’s expectations when they buy chicken; raised locally, air chilled and in a recyclable tray. We are happy to partner with Walmart on this great project and to offer a premium product to Quebecers.”

“We’re passionate about bringing more locally-raised meats, like we have in Quebec with our chicken, beef and pork offerings, to our shelves to ensure we’re not only offering our customers the freshest product but also supporting local agriculture and our hardworking Canadian farmers,” said Sourabh Malik, vice president, food, Walmart Canada. “These locally-raised meats are truly best-in-class: raised in-province, as fresh as possible, delicious, high-quality and, of course, they’re exceptional value at our every day low prices.”

Walmart Canada’s new 100% Quebec-raised chicken offering will proudly carry the Aliments du Quebec and Poulet de Quebec labels. The product began arriving on shelves on September 9, 2024 in recyclable plastic trays.*

Walmart Canada has been proudly serving the province of Quebec for 30 years, since it entered the Canadian marketplace in 1994. Quebec is home to 73 Walmart stores and close to 12,000 associates. Walmart Canada is proud to support local Quebec-based suppliers and purchased approximately 3.5 billion worth of products from more than 480 local suppliers in a recent 12-month period.
