The weather is warming, and Canadians are thinking about getting their outdoor spaces ready for outdoor entertaining. This year, I’ve very excited about our Outdoor Living assortment at Walmart Canada, which features more sustainable options, including cushions made from plastic water bottles, patio sets using FSC-certified wood and more.
Like many merchants at Walmart, I’m always looking at ways to reduce our environmental impact while offering on-trend merchandise for our customers. Aligning with our regeneration strategy, we’re working with our suppliers to source products more sustainably, improve our packaging, and reduce the amount of plastic used overall.
One of my favourite new Spring/Summer 2022 items is our outdoor Hometrends eco decorative cushions, which are exclusive to Walmart Canada.
These stylish cushions are designed to withstand Canadian outdoor conditions, each made with 100% recycled fabric, 100% recycled fill, resulting in 100% recycled product from 13 recycled plastic water bottles!
Through sales of our eco decorative cushions and other patio items made with recycled fabric, we have the potential to repurpose 3.2 million plastic water bottles – and I believe this is truly the tip of the iceberg!
Small actions, smart choices, big impact
Sometimes, as individuals, it can feel like we can’t have an impact. As I stand back and look at this year’s outdoor living collection, I know we can.
Collectively, we can make a huge impact. This can look like putting one more appropriate item in your recycling bin or, in my case, adding a new, more sustainable product in our assortment. Every small step is worth it – and I hope my cushions inspire others to do one “small” thing to positively impact the environment.
Here are a few more ways we’re making small changes that have a positive impact on the environment:
- 17 patio items contain recycled fabric.
- Select patio furniture is made from FSC-certified wood, which is harvested from forests that are responsibly managed.
- Polystyrene-free packaging for all Walmart Brand products in the lawn and garden category.
- Walmart Canada’s patio products ship in cartons made from recycled content and customers can recycle the cardboard afterwards.
At Walmart, we want our customers to feel good about their purchases, without spending more.
I have been at Walmart for almost four years now and what I love most about my job is finding solutions and in turn creatively making things better.
And, there’s nothing I like more than seeing our products in customers’ homes. It really makes me smile and it touches my heart. Our team works so hard in the background developing outdoor living products our customers want and it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to make someone else’s life and the world a little better.
