MISSISSAUGA, ON - October 22, 2026 – Walmart Canada today celebrated the opening its new Fort McMurray Supercentre, bringing a full grocery assortment to the local store for the first time. Customers can now shop fresh produce, meat, dairy, bakery items and packaged foods alongside general merchandise and everyday essentials all at Walmart’s everyday low prices.
The approximately 140,000-square-foot Supercentre is nearly 50 per cent larger than the former location, giving customers more space to shop for everything they need in one place. The opening is part of Walmart Canada’s $6.5 billion investment to grow and modernize its store and supply chain network across the country. Walmart operates 59 stores across Alberta.
More Choice and Convenience for Fort McMurray Customers
The new Supercentre is designed to serve customers in Fort McMurray and families across the broader Wood Buffalo region, including those who travel into the city to shop and stock up on everyday essentials.
“Customers have been asking for a broader grocery offering in Fort McMurray, and we’re proud to now bring that to this community,” said Tim Cooper, Chief Operations Officer, Walmart Canada. “This new Supercentre gives customers more ways to shop for the food, household essentials and general merchandise they need, while continuing to deliver the value they count on from Walmart.”
Customers can shop in store or choose pickup and delivery. The location also includes a pharmacy and vision centre, giving customers more flexibility in how they shop and access services.
Growing Alongside Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo
Walmart first opened its doors in Fort McMurray in 1999. The new Supercentre builds on that history and reinforces our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the community.
We’re proud of the relationships we’ve built with our customers in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo,” said Ary Papadatos, Market Manager, Walmart Canada. “This new Supercentre gives us an opportunity to meet their evolving needs while continuing to be part of a community that has supported us for so many years.”
The new Supercentre replaces Walmart’s former downtown Fort McMurray location, which closed as operations moved to the new store. The new location is home to more than 200 local associates.
“Preparing this Supercentre while continuing to serve customers at our former location took incredible teamwork,” said Sam Stilborn, Store Manager. “Our associates stayed focused on customers, supported one another and brought tremendous care to every part of the transition. I’m proud of what they have accomplished and excited to welcome the community into our new store.”
Supporting the Local Community
Walmart’s commitment to Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region extends beyond the store.
In 2025, the Fort McMurray Walmart raised and donated more than $67,000 to local charities and non-profit organizations and donated more than 15,000 pounds of safe, surplus food to the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association.
To mark the grand opening, Walmart also presented donations to the Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Second Chance Animal Rescue Society.
