Grocery Heroes Day: Meet Shadia Tahsin, a Leader Who Went the Extra Mile

July 21, 2026

When a major winter storm swept through Sudbury earlier this year, it made getting to work —and getting groceries —far more difficult.

As road conditions worsened, some associates couldn’t safely get to the store, even as the community relied on Walmart for groceries, medications and other everyday essentials.

That's when Shadia Tahsin from Store 1105 in Sudbury, Ontario, stepped in.

Without being asked, Shadia drove across the city through challenging conditions, picking up eight associates and bringing them safely to the store. Thanks to her efforts, the store remained open and continued serving customers.

It's moments like these that Grocery Heroes Day, celebrated each year on July 19, is all about. The day recognizes the frontline associates, supply chain teams, corporate associates and suppliers who help keep communities fed and stocked. This year, we're proud to recognize Shadia, whose actions embody what it means to be a Grocery Hero.

"Her team and her community needed help and she stepped up," said Store Manager Afrah Al-Saffar. "That's exactly the kind of people-first culture we're so proud of at Walmart."

Her leadership hasn’t gone unnoticed. Shadia was recently promoted from Grocery Associate to Grocery Department Manager. In just over a year and a half with Walmart, she's earned a reputation for taking ownership, supporting her team and ensuring customers can always find what they need.

To Shadia, being a Grocery Hero is about the everyday moments just as much as the extraordinary ones. What she enjoys most is connecting with customers and making a difference through simple acts of service.

"A Grocery Hero is someone who keeps shelves full, maintains a safe and welcoming department, and helps make every shopping trip easier and more enjoyable," she said.

"Whether it's helping someone find a product, recommending an alternative or simply greeting them with a smile, every interaction matters," she said. "Seeing a customer smile or hearing a simple thank you reminds me why I enjoy what I do."

On Grocery Heroes Day, we're celebrating Shadia and the thousands of Walmart associates across our stores, supply chain facilities and corporate offices who go above and beyond for customers and each other. Whether they’re keeping shelves stocked, moving products across the country or, like Shadia, going the extra mile to support their communities, our associates help Canadians live better every day.

Thank you to all of our Grocery Heroes across Walmart Canada.
