From Hourly Associate to General Manager: Growing a Career at Walmart Canada

June 19, 2026

“It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

That’s how Hansraj John described the moment he was unexpectedly called to the stage at Walmart Canada’s Year Beginning Meeting in March. There, he was announced as the new General Manager of Walmart’s newest non-sort fulfillment centre in Milton, Ontario.

As General Manager, Hansraj leads operations, helping ensure customers receive their online orders quickly and efficiently.

At Walmart Canada, growth is more than a possibility – it’s part of our culture. Hansraj’s story is a great example of how dedication, curiosity and a commitment to people can open doors and create new opportunities.

But this moment didn’t happen overnight. Since joining Walmart as an hourly associate in 2013, Hansraj has spent the past 13 years embracing new opportunities, growing skills and advancing through the business. Having worked in four different facilities and earned multiple promotions along the way, each step of his journey has helped shape the leader he is today.

Throughout his career, Hansraj has taken on increasingly leadership roles across operations, logistics and eCommerce, building broad experience while supporting the growth and evolution of the business. His progression ultimately led to his appointment as General Manager of the Milton Non-Sort Fulfillment Centre.

While Hansraj is grateful for the career opportunities he’s had at Walmart, he says the most rewarding part has always been the people.

“What I enjoy most about my work today is the people aspect — having the opportunity to lead, coach, and develop associates,” he shared. “I’m inspired by building a strong culture where, as a team, we deliver the best possible service to our customers.”

That people-first mindset has been a defining thread throughout his career, and it made his surprise promotion even more meaningful.

“I wasn’t aware that I had been selected,” Hansraj said. “When my promotion was announced, I felt both proud and humbled.”

In that moment, he reflected on the many associates who helped him along the way. “I thought about the people who supported me along the way and the leaders who trusted and believed in me, often before I believed in myself,” he said.

Looking back, Hansraj says his proudest accomplishment isn’t tied to a single milestone. Instead, it’s the impact he’s been able to have on others by building trust, developing teams, and creating positive environments.

Hansraj’s journey, from hourly associate to General Manager, is a reminder of what’s possible at Walmart. It highlights how dedication, a growth mindset, and a commitment to people can open doors and create opportunities.

And while the promotion marked a significant milestone, the journey continues.

Hansraj’s advice for associates looking to advance their careers: "Stay curious, take ownership, and invest in both yourself and your people.”
