Walmart Canada is marking Mental Health Awareness Month with a limited-edition reusable shopping bag featuring exclusive artwork by Toronto artist Adam Macciocchi-Lancia.
The tote, which is available in Walmart stores across the country and online for $2.47, is designed for everyday use, offering a stylish and reusable bag while sparking conversations around mental health. With reinforced handles and a large carrying this reusable tote combines practicality with artistic expression.
The design of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month bag introduces a new layer of storytelling through bold colours, characters and abstract symbolism. For the merchant team behind the bag, the goal was to create something vibrant and open to interpretation.
“This year, we wanted to take a more inclusive approach to the art—something that could mean different things to different people.,” said Balpreet Atwal, Omni Merchant, Packables, Walmart Canada. “The bag design is colourful and intentionally abstract so everyone can connect with it in their own way.”
For Jenny De Los Reyes, Senior Analyst, Modular and Space Planning, Walmart Canada, who selected this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month bag, that vision is exactly what stood out, Jenny saw the design as a powerful way to spark connection while continuing to evolve the bag program’s impact.
For Adam, that layered meaningwas intentional. Over the years, he has become more comfortable being open and vulnerable about his mental health story and sharing it through his art. Over time, the challenges he has faced with mental health have become his superpower.
“The art on the bag is inspired by my mental health journey, the struggles, the joy, and everything in between,” he said. “It’s a commentary on how much we’re all trying to process in today’s digital age. There’s so much going on every day. The piece is about finding balance among all the chaos and taking a positive approach.”
Adam’s work is deeply personal. Living with rare retinal conditions since 2007 and visually impaired, Adam has spent years navigating blindness, surgeries, neurological conditions and severe depression, experiences that continue to shape both his life and his work.
“There were times I couldn’t get out of bed,” he said. “When I was trying to get better, the smallest things became wins. Making my bed was a win. Going for a walk was a win. Those little steps helped me find my way back to myself.”
The Walmart collaboration also feels full circle for Adam. Walmart first discovered his work through a TikTok video he posted last year. Now, his artwork is reaching customers and communities across Canada.
For Walmart Canada, initiatives like this are about more than product design, they’re about creating meaningful connections with customers and associates while helping normalize conversations around mental health. This effort builds on Walmart’s broader commitment to strengthening the communities it serves.
“Especially with mental health, a lot of people suffer in silence,” said Chakara Rainford, Specialist, Merchandising, Walmart Canada. “This is one small way of showing that we understand and support these spaces.”
What started as a reusable bag has become much more. Everyday moments can spark conversation, connect with others, and help people feel seen.
As part of Walmart Canada’s ongoing reusable bag program, customers can expect to see more unique designs this year, each one offering a new opportunity to tell stories and spark connections. Be sure to keep an eye out!
