“I was filled with excitement. I knew it wasn’t just me that won the award. It was our store. It was our community and market.”
This is how Phoenix Hanson, Customer Service Manager from Store 3660 in Flin Flon, Manitoba, described the moment she was named Walmart Canada’s 2025 Shining Star of the Year. Her words reflect exactly who she is. Someone who shares success and uplifts those around her.
Chosen from more than 100,000 associates, Phoenix was recognized for truly living Walmart’s values through her dedication to her customers, her team and her community.
A Star Who Rises
Phoenix’s story is one of steady growth and genuine connection. Over the past seven years, she’s taken on a variety of roles, starting as a cashier and growing into a Customer Service Manager. Today, she continues that journey as an Office Support Associate, bringing the same energy and commitment that have defined her path.
In every role, her focus has remained the same: people.
She’s dedicated to ensuring customers leave the store feeling valued. She takes pride in serving her community by building real connections.
“When regulars come into the store, it’s always nice to recognize them by name,” says Phoenix.
It’s this attention to people, both customers and associates, that makes her impact so meaningful.
Building Connection and Belonging
Phoenix’s leadership became especially clear during the Flin Flon wildfire evacuation, when the team was unexpectedly dispersed across two provinces. In a time of uncertainty and disruption, she became a steady source of connection, lifting spirits and reinforcing a sense of belonging when it was needed most.
Her impact during that time left a lasting impression, not just in how the team worked, but in how they supported one another.
That same sense of unity and care was reflected to her when she received the award. Her team came together to celebrate her achievement in a deeply emotional way.
“They were all so very happy to see me win the award. They took pictures of the livestream, congratulated me, and cried tears of joy. In our store, we are all like family. We support each other.” says Phoenix.
Her influence goes beyond day-to-day operations. She helps create a culture where associates feel supported and valued. A culture that reflects the very best of Walmart.
Phoenix’s Words of Wisdom
When asked what advice she would give to fellow associates, Phoenix keeps it simple and powerful:
“Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Make that page, lead that Walmart cheer and get yourself out there.”
It’s a message that mirrors her own journey. One built on courage, connection and a willingness to step forward.
