Behind every Walmart Brands item is a close supplier relationship that helps to bring our unique offering to life, with high quality products at the everyday low prices customers expect from Walmart.
Decades ago, Walmart Canada began working with Cascades, a Quebec-based paper product manufacturer, selling their household paper products on our shelves.
Today, along with supplying their national brand products in Quebec, Cascades manufactures Walmart Canada’s Great Value Eco paper towels, napkins, and bathroom tissue, all made from 100% recycled fibers, offering customers a better-for-the-environment option at an accessible everyday low price.
Plus, these Great Value Eco products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, which ensures paper products are responsibly sourced and meet high environmental standards.
“Our Walmart Brands are an opportunity to create the products our customers are looking for at a quality and everyday low price we’re proud of,” shares Flora Thay, Vice President of Product Development and Quality, Walmart Brands. “Working with trusted suppliers like Cascades allows us to deliver dependable, well-designed products that meet our standards and the everyday needs of our customers.”
Walmart Canada and Cascades’ shared passion for supporting local communities, people, and the environment are just a few of the reasons why the companies have had such a successful working relationship for decades.
“From design to end of life, we work with Cascades to develop products with the sustainability certifications and features that resonate with our Walmart customers,” explains Michael Chong, Product Developer, Walmart Canada.
“Their sustainability-focused innovation is based on recognized standards. All of this helps us provide a trusted, better-for-the-environment option for household paper – a product families use every day.”
A circular economy for recycling
In addition to manufacturing more sustainable products, Cascades is also helping Walmart Canada reduce waste by collecting cardboard from its stores and giving it a second life by turning it into new products.
Cascades picks up bales of used cardboard from our stores and transports them to nearby mills. The cardboard is then transformed into new pulp to produce packaging like container board boxes. The boxes can then be used to package other goods, including our Great Value Eco products.
“You give a second life to a product that could have gone to a dump site and that could have been a single use,” says Hugues Simon, President and CEO of Cascades.
Decades of collaboration
Through the years, Hugues says Cascades’ work with Walmart Canada has pushed the company to apply more rigorous standards and execute better.
This in turn has helped Cascades grow to what it is today, with more than 9,000 employees and 61 operating facilities across North America.
Hugues says the relationship between Cascades and Walmart “is one that could be in a book” – and one he hopes continues for many years to come.
“Our collaboration is good for our companies, it’s good for consumers, and it’s good for the environment,” Hugues says.
