In 2023, Walmart Canada’s merchants responsible for bringing infant formula to our shelves knew it was time to roll up their sleeves and look for new solutions to help Canadian parents - going above and beyond for our customers.
The global baby formula shortage had spread to specialized formula and regular infant formula powders - and our merchants knew it was time to think big. Parents across the country were going to great lengths to feed their formula-reliant infants, including stockpiling and crossing the border to source the needed nutrition.
“The concern for Canadian families was palpable on our team,” shared Steve Perrier, Senior Merchant, Baby Consumables. “Our focus was bringing immediate relief to Canadian parents by generating a consistent, reliable supply of formula - but we were also looking for opportunities to future-proof our baby formula supply chain for the future.”
Expanding our formula supply to help Canadian parents
Without domestic production and supply of formula, Canadians and retailers were in a tricky spot. Acting with our customers' best interests in mind, our Walmart merchants sprang into action and secured two additional formula sources, introducing Modilac formula from France in 2023 and British-made Kendamil organic infant formula in 2024.
Walmart Canada has embarked on a journey to redefine the landscape of formula availability, endeavouring to provide Canadian families with consistent access to essential baby formula. Through innovative sourcing strategies, proactive measures and sustainable solutions, Walmart is not only striving to keep shelves stocked but forging a path toward long-term success.
These additions have helped to extend and diversify our formula supply pipeline, helping to future-proof it against future supply challenges and bringing additional quality options to the Canadian market.
