Walmart Canada rolls out generative AI-powered tool to head office associates

Nov. 27, 2023

All Walmart Canada home office associates are getting an assistant – a Gen AI powered one.

The retailer announced its launch of My Assistant, an AI-powered chat bot for secure internal use for all home office-based associates.

“As a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer, we’re always looking for ways to integrate technology into our daily lives to help simplify and modernize our ways of working,” says Michon Williams, Chief Technology Officer, Walmart Canada. “We want to lean into this technology to help our associates simplify tasks in their day to day.”

From speeding up the drafting process, to summarizing large documents or meeting notes, to serving as a collaborative partner, My Assistant can help free up time from daily tedious tasks, allowing associates to shift focus to more complex operations that require big thinking and creative solutions.

“We’re excited to embrace this new technology,” says AnnMarie Mercer, Chief People Officer, Walmart Canada. “For Walmart Canada, Gen AI is not a replacement for human work or thinking. It’s a tool associates can leverage to complement the way we work and improve our productivity.”

The goal for My Assistant is to eventually serve as even more of a self-service tool for associates, with full integration with the company’s intranet and HR platforms: a ‘one-stop shop’ for associates to access information they need on demand.

Until then, Walmart Canada didn’t want to wait to get My Assistant in the hands of its associates.

“There are so many different use cases for Gen AI and we can’t wait to see how our associates use it,” shares Michon. “We’re encouraging everyone to lean into this new technology; try it out, see what works, and how it can enhance the way we work.”

Leveraging AI isn’t new to Walmart Canada. The retailer is embracing AI and machine learning in an accountable, robust and secure way across its supply chain and stores to support inventory management, forecasting, storage profiling, and routing optimizations.

Walmart founder Sam Walton famously said, “our people make the difference,” and that will remain true for Walmart Canada, as the people-led, tech powered, omnichannel retailer continues its use and exploration of new, innovative technology.
