A Day in the Life of a Walmart Fleet Driver

Sep. 9, 2024

At Walmart Canada, we run a 24/7 operation, and it’s the dedication of our Walmart Fleet drivers that keeps us moving. Whether they’re navigating traffic jams or tough weather conditions, these drivers are essential to our supply chain, ensuring shelves are stocked and communities are served. Recognized as a Top Fleet Employer for four years running, we’re proud of the commitment and excellence they bring on every journey.

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a Walmart Fleet driver is like? For our more than 900 drivers, their day begins at one of our distribution centres, where they log in with their unique user ID and password to receive the key to their truck. Safety is paramount, so they start and end their day with a meticulous inspection, checking things like the vehicle’s brakes, tires, lights and more. "Safety is my top priority every single day. I make sure to perform thorough inspections to avoid any potential hiccups on the road," shares Thaddeus Ogini, a Walmart Fleet Driver who has been with the company for over 20 years and driven two million miles without a single accident.

Once their truck is ready, they log into their in-truck communication device to get their route and head out to pick up their trailer. Drivers perform a pre- and post-trip inspection — checking for damage, ensuring the load is secure, verifying the trailer number, and confirming the seal is intact, among others. Thaddeus adds, “each day my goal is the same: ensure I’m safe on the road and everyone around me is safe too.”

Next, they stop by security to validate the trailer is sealed and headed to the correct destination. Louis O’Neil Leclerc, Walmart Fleet Driver in Montreal, Quebec, says, "I love the freedom of the open road and the responsibility that comes with it. Every day is a new adventure, and it’s rewarding to know I make a difference."

Some drivers embark on multi-stop routes, while others have a single destination. Throughout the day, they maintain constant communication with the team, ensuring timely and safe deliveries. Before wrapping up, drivers take a moment to connect with store associates, ensuring every delivery is seamless. Ratinder Singh, Walmart Fleet Driver in Nisku, Alberta, emphasizes the importance of teamwork, "at Walmart, we’re not just drivers; we’re part of a team. The support we receive from each other and from our leaders is incredible. It keeps me motivated and encourages me to continue delivering excellence."

At the end of the day, our Walmart Fleet drivers head home, knowing they’ve played a vital role in our supply chain.
