Walmart Canada associate houses family following 9/11 attacks

April 11, 2024

“I guess I must’ve got to someone’s heart,” Walmart Canada associate, Sharon Richards said with tears in her eyes after reading a message left by a family she helped following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Directly following the attacks on September 11, 2001, hundreds of American flights were rerouted to Canadian airports, 38 of them landed in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland.

The town showed their hospitality and kindness by coming together to offer up all that they could to support those that were stranded in their town until they could return home. One of those individuals was Walmart associate, Sharon Richards from Store #3033.

Sharon welcomed a family into her home that needed a place to stay while they waited to find out what their next steps were. Though they were strangers to one another, Sharon’s love and compassion for people is what led her to help the family without hesitation.

This year Walmart Canada celebrates 30 years of helping Canadians save money so they can live better and is recognizing the significant moments and special associates who make up our history in this country.
