Two bags and a thousand dreams: How Walmart Canada helped me adapt and grow in a new country

April 10, 2024

As an immigrant, starting life in a new country is a scary thought.

I came from India to Canada alone, with all my basic needs packed in two luggage bags and a thousand dreams in my eyes, but no idea how I would get there.

Luckily, with the support of my family, Walmart Canada and all of the helpful people I met along my journey, I was able to get to where I am today.

The day after my plane landed, I registered myself for a few job fairs where I saw an advertisement for Walmart Supply Chain Logistics. Five days later I was fortunate to be starting a job at Walmart Canada’s Perishable Distribution Centre in Mississauga.

Full of limitless opportunities

Walmart allowed me to find myself and provided me with the tools to grow both personally and professionally.

I started as an Operations Associate and a little over a year later, I was asked to take on a Quality Assurance position at Walmart’s High Velocity Distribution Centre in Cornwall, Ontario. Within 10 months, I was promoted to a Team Leader role at the Imports Distribution Centre in Cornwall.

I’ve also had the opportunity to be part of Walmart Canada’s Rising Star program, designed to fast track the development of high-potential women leaders in the business and be a Women in Supply Chain (WISC) Lead. WISC is another program Walmart offers aimed at empowering women across Walmart’s supply chain in their growth and career development. Through these programs, I’ve had the opportunity meet and learn from some amazing women and male allies.

Walmart provides its associates with the right foundation for success.

Apart from the wonderful teammates who helped me overcome all the cultural and language barriers that almost every newcomer faces, Walmart provided me training, mentorship, and every opportunity to help me develop my career and adapt in a new country.

I’m a proud associate who’s fortunate to have been part of just a few of the amazing programs offered by Walmart that have helped me build a life here and thrive.

This year Walmart Canada celebrates 30 years of helping Canadians save money so they can live better and is recognizing associates such as, Kanika who have used their experiences working at Walmart to develop a meaningful career.

Employing more than 100,000 associates, it’s one of the largest employers in the country and serves as career gateway for many Canadians and newcomers to Canada. Each week, approximately 3 million customers visit its over 400 stores nationwide and Walmart.ca. Walmart Canada is committed to the communities it serves and since 1994, has raised over $750 million to support communities from coast-to-coast.
