    Walmart’s goal is to make as light a footprint on the planet as we can, and we take this responsibility very seriously. We have three goals: to create zero waste, operate with 100% renewable energy and sell products that sustain our resources and the environment. We are using our strengths to not only further work in our own operations, but to also help create shared value for customers and society.

    Before Walmart can ask customers and suppliers to make a change, we need to lead with steps in the right direction. Our company-wide sustainability initiatives help promote positive change in communities across the world.

Any effort to treat the planet better starts with simply consuming less. This applies to our stores, distribution centres, fleet and suppliers. All our stores have been retrofit with LED lights resulting in a reduction of Walmart’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 47,000 metric tonnes of CO2.

In 2019, Walmart announced Project Gigaton, a global Walmart effort that invites suppliers to reduce emissions from global supply chains. Removing one gigaton of emissions from global value chains is equivalent to the reduction of the emissions from 211 million average passenger vehicles in a year. That’s more than five times the total number of vehicles registered in Canada in 2017. So far, more than 590 of Walmart’s Canadian suppliers, including Maple Leaf Foods, Unilever Canada, Agropur Cooperative and many more have already made Project Gigaton commitments. Collectively, we’ve made great progress, but there is still a long way to go.

Walmart Canada is also committed to 100 per cent alternatively powered fleet vehicles by 2028. We’re targeting our first milestone of electrifying 20 per cent of our fleet to electric by 2022. Our new Tesla semi trucks will help us reduce our carbon footprint while keeping focus on driver safety. It’s a win-win!
  • Waste

    Walmart is mindful of how much waste we create, which is why we’ve committed to sending zero waste to landfill. This goal may be bold, but we continue to make measurable progress to towards it. The Zero Waste International Alliance defines zero waste as 90% diversion from landfills and incinerators. For 2019, our waste diversion rate was 89% thanks to our focus on reducing waste across our operations.

Food Waste
Walmart has committed to achieving zero food waste to landfill by 2025, building on our successful business and philanthropic initiatives to eliminate waste and relieve hunger in our communities. The company’s ambitious journey to achieving this goal is guided by three basic principles.
  1. Improve operational efficiencies while enhancing value to the customer
  2. Increasing food donations
  3. Providing philanthropic support

In recent years, we’ve made significant progress towards reducing food waste, including:
Discounting repackaged bruised or peak-freshness produce through Walmart’s $1/$2 Bag Program and reducing prices with Walmart’s Customer Value Program to allow for the quick sale of fresh meat, bakery, dairy and produce items approaching their best-before dates.
Improving bakery production operations to reduce over-production and create more consistent quality.
Introducing more processes, training and resources to associates.
Implementing organic recycling programs in 338 stores and distribution centre locations across Canada, allowing facilities to recycle unsaleable and unsafe food into compost and energy instead of sending it to landfill.
Pairing all Walmart stores with local food banks to maximize surplus food donations, with approximately 85 per cent of stores regularly donating their surplus food products.
Providing philanthropic support, including $3 million to Food Banks Canada for the past three years for the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign in support of food banks across the country.

The Walmart Foundation has also invested $15 million USD (~$19 million CAD) across Canada in not-for-profit organizations engaged in research and innovative initiatives to reduce food waste all along the food chain.

As a result of our efforts to reduce food waste, we decreased non-diverted food waste by approximately 35%* during the calendar year 2018 compared to 2016.

*Walmart Canada reports 35% of absolute non-diverted food waste reduction. In accordance with global methodology, Walmart Canada reduced non-diverted food waste as a percentage of food sold by 43% in calendar year 2018 compared to 2016.
Plastic Waste Reduction Strategy
Walmart continues to reduce unnecessary plastic waste and increasing plastic recycling in our operations. Since launching our Walmart Canada Charter on Plastics – our commitment to address plastic waste in Canada by using less plastic, recycling more plastic, and supporting improvements to the plastic waste reduction system – we have implemented a number of changes:
Eliminated plastic wrap from organic bananas bunches, which will remove about 14,000 lbs. of plastic
Eliminated plastic wrap from single peppers, which will remove about 193,000 lbs. of plastic
Increasing post-consumer recycled content in the packaging holding baked goods, avoiding the use of 925,000 lbs. of new plastics annually
Removing 420,000 lbs. of expanded poly styrene from entering the supply chain annually by introducing new packaging for sausage trays
Eliminated all single-use plastic cutlery from cafeterias at Walmart Canada’s corporate offices and distribution centres
Eliminated single-use plastic straws and replacing them with paper alternatives by 2020, taking approximately 35 million single-use plastic straws out of circulation annually

There is much more work to do, but these changes will help prevent more than 1.1 million pounds of plastic from entering the supply chain. These changes build on our mission to champion plastic waste reduction initiatives in Canada, including:
Decreasing plastic bag use by 50 per cent since 2016 and a further 50 per cent by 2025 taking approximately 1 billion checkout bags out of circulation over that period
Committing to 100 per cent recyclable packaging in all private brand products by 2025.

To support improvements to the plastic waste reduction system, we are:
Becoming the first Canadian retailer to publicly commit to using How2Recycle labelling on all our own private brand products by 2025
Partnering with governments, manufacturers and other stakeholders, to work towards reducing unnecessary plastic packaging and increasing plastic recycling
A founding partner of the Plastic Action Centre, a unique knowledge hub solely dedicated to plastic waste education and reduction across Canada and beyond
A founding member of the Canadian Circular Economy Leadership Coalition which seeks to foster collaboration among industries, experts, communities and all levels of government
A supporter of the G7 Ocean Plastics Charter, which seeks to move toward a more resource-efficient and sustainable approach to the management of plastics
A signatory to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which commits to eliminating all problematic and unnecessary plastic items
Enacting the Closed Loop Fund to engage the industry in supporting recycling infrastructure (one of the major gaps in the circular economy) and supporting the major NGO/industry consortia studying the issue (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Ocean Conservancy, Trash Free Seas Alliance)
Working with The Walmart Foundation, which will provide support for Canadian initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste

We believe customers shouldn’t have to choose between products they can afford and products that are produced in an environmentally responsible way. We collaborate with suppliers to make sure the products we sell are as affordable, safe and sustainable as possible.

Our goal is to build transparency and continuous improvement in our seafood supply chain so that we can provide our customers safe, affordable and sustainable seafood that does not negatively impact global communities or the environment.

We know our customers want products that are affordable, safe and good for the environment. Walmart supports the advancement of sustainable chemistry practices to help minimize the negative impacts certain chemical products and processes may cause to humans, animals, plants or the environment.

Sustainable Pulp & Paper - Sustainable Forests
Walmart supports certifications to reduce forest loss and improve sustainability of commodities such as palm oil, pulp and paper.

In 2015, based upon supplier reported data, 100% of our private-brand palm oil was sourced through a combination of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification criteria, including Mass Balance, Segregated, Identity Preserved and Credits.

In 2017, we strengthened our efforts and set a more ambitious goal to source our private-brand palm oil in accordance with the principles and criteria of RSPO, using only Mass Balance or Segregated supply chain systems, or equivalent standards, by the end of 2020.

In the fall of 2020, we made our most ambitious commitments to date – to source our private brand palm oil in accordance with the principals and criteria of RSPO using Segregated supply chain systems or equivalent standards by the end of 2025. We are also encouraging our national brand suppliers to source palm oil in accordance with RSPO, using only Mass Balance or Segregated supply chain systems, or equivalent standards.

By 2025, Walmart’s goal is that private brand products made of pulp, paper, and timber will be sourced deforestation and conversion-free. Walmart aims to implement sustainable pulp, paper, and timber procurement practices that promote sustainable management, conservation, protection and restoration of the world’s forests.

Animal Welfare
We recognize that farm animals play an important role in providing nutritious meat, dairy and eggs to our customers. Walmart Canada believes the animals in our supply chain should be treated humanely throughout their lives and will not tolerate animal abuse of any kind. We support the globally-recognized “Five Freedoms” of animal welfare as an aspiration for animal welfare in our supply chain.

Walmart Canada is committed to ensuring the farm animals in our supply chain are treated humanely throughout their lives and that the welfare of farm animals be considered in selection of all production systems, practices and technologies.

We will not tolerate animal abuse of any kind and we support the globally-recognized “Five Freedoms” of animal welfare as an aspiration for animal welfare in our supply chain. We are working with our suppliers and industry partners to ensure the humane treatment of animals consistent with the Five Freedoms.

Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst – by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
2. Freedom from Discomfort – by providing appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease – by ensuring prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

In 2013 and 2016 respectively, Walmart committed to the pursuit of gestation crate free pork by 2022 and cage free eggs by 2025. Although progress has been made toward both of these goals it has become apparent that they will not be achieved in the original timelines. We remain committed to ongoing dialogue with the supply chain to make progress on these important initiatives. Additionally, we are working toward a reporting system that will provide periodic updates on our progress toward enhanced animal welfare.

Walmart Canada is proud to offer a full line of Greenfield products nationally. 100% of Greenfield products are sourced from Canadian farms whose animals are raised without antibiotics and in open pens. In addition, Walmart Canada continues to work with suppliers to source pork from farms using open pen housing for sows as soon as possible based on availability and costs.

Additionally, Walmart Canada continues to work with suppliers to source shelled eggs from cage free, free run and organic farmers. Check out our current assortment of cage free eggs which includes our own Walmart Brand of free run, organic eggs.
As part of our commitment to protect and restore natural resources involved in production of the products we sell, Walmart Canada is taking these initial steps to promote pollinator health:
  1. Source 100% of the fresh produce and floral we sell in our in-store Produce Department from suppliers that adopt integrated pest management practices, as verified by a third-party, by 2025.
  2. Help improve and expand pollinator habitats.

Textile products are an essential part of our customers’ everyday lives and represent an important sector in the global economy. As the global population is projected to rise, the demand for products like clothing, towels and other textile products will likely increase, while resources are expected to become scarcer. The challenge facing the world is how to produce an increasing volume of products while working to conserve resources. Walmart aims to address this challenge by working with suppliers, NGOs and other industry stakeholders to improve the sustainability of our textiles supply chain.

By 2025, Walmart will endeavour to:
  • Source 100% more sustainable cotton for Walmart Canada Private Brand apparel and soft home textile products (for products containing cotton)
  • Source 50% recycled polyester for Walmart Canada Private Brand apparel and soft home textile products by 2025 (for products containing polyester)
  • Require suppliers to ensure that none of the manmade cellulosic fibres – including rayon/viscose, modal, lyocell, acetate and trademarked versions – sourced Walmart Canada Private Brand apparel and soft home textile products are derived from ancient and endangered forests, or from endangered species’ habitats or other controversial sources, as defined by the nonprofit organization Canopy’s tools and reports.
