- As the world’s largest retailer, we have the ability to positively influence the global supply chain. One way we do this is through the Responsible Sourcing Academy, which is aimed at providing our suppliers with tools and training opportunities designed to influence continuous and sustainable improvement, including:
- Responsible Sourcing Audit Orientation is designed to provide new factories and suppliers with training in social and environmental compliance, fire, chemical and machine safety, dormitory and canteen standards, region-specific trends and more.
- Violation Correction Training addresses common trends related to social and environmental compliance and ways to address those issues, with special focus on locally relevant topics. Through training in root-cause analysis, factories are able to develop plans to remedy potential violations.
- Orange School Program provides individualized, hands-on training to select factories and suppliers. Using root-cause analysis methodology and procedures, we teach factory management to proactively identify noncompliance issues and develop a systematic approach to continuous improvement.
- Supply Chain Forum invites suppliers, factories and stakeholders from similar sourcing regions to discuss relevant issues and share best practices.
We will continue to re-evaluate and evolve the Responsible Sourcing Academy to meet the changing needs of our suppliers and other stakeholders.
Women in Factories training
In 2011, as part of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, Walmart announced Women in Factories, a five-year training program for factory workers. The program was launched when the Walmart Foundation granted $10 million to NGOs to build a training curriculum focused on developing life and work skills and to deliver it to at least 60,000 women factory workers by 2016. The Women in Factories program offers both foundational and advanced training in Bangladesh, China, El Salvador, Honduras and India.
