Walmart-Evergreen Green Grants Program Celebrates 500th Grant

·  $ 400,000 in Green Grants awarded to 70 communities from St-John’s to Vancouver to Nunavut

April 18, 2013, Toronto, ON:
Evergreen is proud to announce the recipients of the 2013 Walmart–Evergreen Green Grants program, celebrating the milestone of 500 projects supported across Canada since the grant program started in 2005. This year, 70 communities throughout Canada—from St. John’s to Vancouver to Nunavut—received grants to fund neighbourhood greening projects totaling $400,000.

“From a children’s outdoor playground in Inuvik, to supporting food gardens in Toronto, people across this country care about their community,” said John Lawrence, director of corporate social responsibility for Walmart Canada. “We’re thrilled that our partnership with Evergreen allows us to help facilitate that passion into action, helping neighbours come together and build, protect and restore those community green spaces close to all our hearts.”

Each grant recipient will receive funds of up to $10,000 for community projects supporting urban naturalization and the local environment. The Green Grants program, sponsored by Walmart Canada and led by Evergreen, is in its eighth year of enabling local communities to take an active role in the restoration and stewardship of green spaces across Canada.

“Helping families in need, and empowering priority neighbourhoods to grow food gardens and enhance their community space is inspiring,” says Geoff Cape, CEO Evergreen. “Multiplied by 500, we’re humbled and proud to be able to support these community efforts with Walmart across Canada.”

Walmart-Evergreen Green Grants include:

Seeds of Change, Food Education Action St. John’s (FEASt)- St. John’s, NL

The project will provide starter gardening kits to the local community to encourage food growing initiatives and support to individuals and families wishing to grow their own food at the Pippy Park Family Community Garden.

As Evergreen`s first ever grant recipient in Nunavut, the project will engage elders in teaching youth how to sustainably live off of the land and harvest and prepare traditional foods.

The project fosters knowledge exchange between youth and the elderly, where they work together planning community meals using produce grown on site in the multicultural East Vancouver neighbourhood.

A youth led not-for-profit, the grant will support their rooftop garden in Montréal’s central Plateau neighbourhood, with a greenhouse, vertical growing, and edible landscaping, as well as urban beekeeping.
