Mississauga, Ontario, November 11, 2011 – Walmart Canada announced today that its annual fundraising campaign in support of the Juno Beach Centre raised $825,000. The Juno Beach Centre is a unique Canadian-based museum and cultural centre situated near the heritage-designated site of the original D-Day landings in Normandy, France. The museum was founded to preserve and honor the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers and citizens during the Second World War.
Walmart Canada’s two week long, nationwide campaign in support of the museum collected $715,000 through customer donations. A further $110,000 was contributed by Walmart Canada through its matching grants program.
“The Juno Beach Centre is grateful to Walmart Canada and its customers for their continued generosity,” said Garth Webb, D-Day veteran and president of the Juno Beach Centre. “The funds collected this year will add to the more than $7.5 million Walmart Canada has raised and contributed in funding and marketing support for the Juno Beach Centre since the museum’s inception in 2000.”
The money donated and raised by Walmart Canada and its customers will be used to directly fund two exhibit rooms at the Juno Beach Centre – the Canada Today Room, which showcases the diversity of our country in the new millennium, and a temporary exhibit room which houses a variety of ever-changing displays.
“Especially on Remembrance Day, it is important to take the time to revisit and honour the sacrifices of our veterans,” said John Lawrence, director of corporate social responsibility at Walmart Canada. “Walmart Canada is proud to support the Juno Beach Centre in its mission to preserve Canada’s World War II legacy for future generations.”
