Walmart Canada honours World War II heroes with fundraising campaign for Juno Beach Centre

Mississauga, Ontario - October 6, 2011 - Walmart Canada announced today the launch of its 11th annual fundraising campaign for the Juno Beach Centre, an educational museum located in Normandy, France that honors Canadian World War II heroes. Starting today, customers are invited to donate a loonie at the checkout to support the museum.  The campaign, which runs until October 21, 2011, will add to the more than $7.5 million Walmart Canada has donated and raised in funding and marketing support since the centre’s inception.

Walmart Canada and its customers helped establish the Juno Beach Centre in 2003.  The company continues to support the museum today as its leading corporate sponsor. Situated near the heritage-designated site of the original D-Day landings, the Juno Beach Centre is a permanent memorial designed to honor the sacrifices made by Canadians during the Second World War.

“The Juno Beach Centre is an important resource for all of Canada,” said John Lawrence, director of corporate social responsibility at Walmart Canada. “Walmart Canada is proud to honour all Canadians who contributed to the war effort.”

Money donated and raised by Walmart Canada and its customers this October will be used to directly fund two exhibit rooms at the Juno Beach Centre – the Canada Today Room, which showcases the diversity of our country in the new millennium, and a temporary exhibit room which houses a variety of ever-changing displays.

“In contributing to the Juno Beach Centre, Walmart and its customers are helping to preserve an important period of time in Canadian history,” said Garth Webb, D-Day veteran and president of the Juno Beach Centre. “The centre helps ensure that the lessons learnt during World War II are not lost on future generations.”
