Marketing and Advertising Privacy Notice

Please read this notice in conjunction with our Privacy Notice.

About our ads

We use marketing and advertising to let you know about the great products and services we provide, offers available to you, events and community initiatives. For example:

  • Online advertising: We collect information such as device identifiers and device data through cookies and other tracking mechanisms placed on our websites and websites of media partners/publishers that feature Walmart advertising. We use information about which of our websites and apps you visit, and what products and services you browse and buy to help ensure that the advertising you see from us is as timely and relevant as possible. In some cases, we may use your personal information (to help target our advertising and understand its effectiveness) and in others they do not.
  • Direct marketing (where marketing communications are sent directly to individuals by email, SMS or post): We may use personal information in order to send you direct marketing when you have given us permission to do so or where consent is implied based on your purchase from Walmart. In most cases we collect this information directly from you, for example when you register for a Walmart.ca account, or make purchases through Walmart.ca or in one of our stores. We may collect your marketing responses if you open an email from us and click on a link to view products or offers.
  • Push notifications (where you receive notifications directly on your device from apps): We do use personal information for these notifications when you have given us permission to do so. We may use the address you have registered on your app account to help ensure that notifications you receive are relevant to your location.

  • You will not see the same ads over and over again because we limit the number of related ads you see.

How do we use your personal information?

In order to deliver tailored advertisements to you on Walmart.ca, Walmart mobile applications and other third-party websites and applications (on your computer, mobile device or tablet) (collectively, "websites”), we and third-party advertising companies may use cookies and other tracking mechanisms to collect information about your visits to our website and other websites. The information we collect includes:

  • products or web pages you view on our websites
  • products you purchase on our websites
  • ads you click on our websites

Where possible, we anonymize information so that individuals can’t be identified. Relevant content is created based on your website interactions and experience. We take information from all online customers and anonymously aggregate it to understand what features are popular and improve our content over time. This allows us to tailor your journey in a way that makes the most sense to you without compromising your privacy.

Who do we share it with?

We share your personal information with third parties like advertising agencies, third party ad servers, technology vendors, providers of sponsored content, research firms, and our family of companies to improve our website’s performance and appeal and help us to provide more customized advertising and marketing for you as our customers. We do not sell your personal information.

What are your choices?

Walmart collects, uses, or shares your personal information consistent with this privacy notice. The method of obtaining consent, either implied or express, is appropriate for the type of personal information being collected, used, or shared.

  • Marketing Preferences – You may ask us to stop sending direct marketing communications at any time. To make this as easy as possible, we include an “unsubscribe” link on all of our marketing emails and an option to reply “STOP” on SMS.  In addition, you may provide us with your marketing preferences, or change your marketing preferences, by contacting Customer Experience.

    If you contact us by email or mail, please be sure to include your full name, the types of communications you would like to receive or not receive, and your contact information. For instance, if you would like to opt out of mail, include your mailing address. Please allow sufficient time for your preferences to be processed. It may take up to 10 days to process your requests related to email and 4-6 weeks for other requests.

    Please be aware that, even if you have opted out of receiving marketing communications from us, we may still contact you for transactional purposes. Some examples are contacts for customer service, product information, service or reminder notices, or recalls. We may also need to contact you with questions or information regarding your order, such as regarding order status, shipment, or refunds.

  • Online Advertising, Mobile Apps and Cookies -You may exercise choices related to our online operations. For instance, you may choose to browse our websites without accepting cookies. To learn more about cookies, see our Cookie Notice.   If you have downloaded our mobile app, you may change your permission settings at any time by going into your device settings. You may stop all collection of personal information generated by the use of our mobile app by uninstalling the app. When you uninstall the Walmart app from your phone, you will remove your preferences stored on the app including your login information and your local store preferences.

    If you opt out of receiving interest-based advertising, you will continue to receive advertising, but it will not be based on your behaviour online.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. This means we will not deny you goods or services, charge different prices or rates, provide a different level of service or quality of goods, or suggest that you might receive a different price or level of quality for goods. If you ask us to delete your data or if you choose to disable your cookies, you may not be able to participate in certain programs or services which require use of your personal information to function.

How long do we keep your personal information?

We retain your personal information (i) indefinitely, when you provide explicit consent or (ii) for three (3) years after the last interaction with Walmart, at which point your personal information will be securely deleted or anonymized. Based on implied consent, your email address is used for the purpose of sending promotional emails for two years after your last transaction with Walmart unless you unsubscribe from our email marketing.
