What is Walmart doing about hunger?

To understand our commitment to serving communities, it helps to know that Walmart was founded to bring people access to the most important things they need to live their lives better – and what could be more important than access to food? We believe, every family should have access to affordable, safe, nutritious, food. Together with our partners across the country, we are committed to making a real difference eliminating food insecurity in our communities through:

Food donations – Our Food Diversion Program pairs Walmart Canada stores with a local food bank. Through this program, we have donated more than 25 million pounds of food to food banks across the country

‘Fight Hunger. Spark Change.’ – Over the past three years, this national fundraising campaign has secured more than 35 million meals for Canadians.

Infrastructure and capacity building – Walmart and The Walmart Foundation have donated millions of dollars to help Food Banks Canada and food recovery networks improve and enhance their capacity and infrastructure so they can accept more food from all donors and distribute it faster and easier to those that need it.

School breakfast programs – For the past 17 years, Walmart Canada has worked with Breakfast Club of Canada, donating and raising more than $50 million to help feed more than 243,000 students each day, in 1,800 schools across the country.

As one of Canada’s largest retailers, we are relentless in our commitment to making healthier food more accessible to our customers. Sixty per cent of Canadians live within 10 kilometres of a Walmart store, and we serve more than 2 million customers a day, which gives us a unique opportunity to make every day a little easier for busy families.
