MOUNT PEARL, NL September 13, 2018 – Walmart Canada today announced plans to convert three Newfoundland Walmart stores to Supercentres – a first for the province. Walmart’s Supercentres provide customers with a one-stop shopping experience featuring a full complement of fresh, quality groceries in addition to general merchandise.

The first Newfoundland Supercentre opens today at the Mount Pearl Walmart located at 60 Merchant Drive. Two additional stores, Kelsey Drive and Stravanger Drive, will be converting to Supercentres within the coming weeks.

“We’re thrilled to bring our Supercentre format to Newfoundland with a fresh offering that we know our customers will enjoy,” said Lee Tappenden, president and CEO, Walmart Canada. “Walmart’s mission has always been to help people save money so they can live better. Our goal is to bring this promise to our customers in Newfoundland so they can benefit from Walmart’s everyday low prices.”

Supercentre Growth:
Launched in 2006, the Walmart Supercentre format is a customer favourite, providing a one-stop shopping experience by adding a variety of fresh groceries and food items including Canada No. 1 grade fruits and vegetables, Canadian AAA Angus beef, chicken, pork and salmon, baked goods and meals to go in addition to the store’s current merchandise selection. All Walmart’s fresh groceries come with a 100 per cent satisfaction money-back guarantee. Today, Supercentres make up 80 per cent of Walmart’s retail store chain and with the opening of the Mount Pearl Supercentre, Walmart Canada now has Supercentres in all 10 provinces from coast-to-coast.

Local Investment:The launch of Walmart’s Supercentre format in Newfoundland has resulted in approximately 130 jobs including management, cashiers, overnight and customer experience positions. More than $20 million has been invested in the three Newfoundland store locations to enhance the shopping experience. All three Supercentre locations will feature a selection of meat, baked goods and produce that have been sourced locally from Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada.

Enhanced Shopping Experience:
In addition to adding a fresh grocery offering, the stores’ layouts have been redesigned to include bright interior signage along with wider and easy-to-navigate aisles.

Today’s grand opening celebrations at the Mount Pearl store will feature a special presentation, swag bag giveaways to the first 200 customers, product sampling, a cheque presentation to the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation and a ribbon cutting ceremony. The festivities will continue on Saturday, September 15, with family-fun activities, demos and more for customers to enjoy.
