Canadian Red Cross relies on long term Partner Walmart Canada to meet the need
Walmart donates $100,000 as disasters test resolve of Canadians
OTTAWA, May 19 /CNW/ - Only five months into the year, Canadians from-coast-to-coast to-coast have faced a number of disasters - enough to test the resolve of both large and small communities. Three months of persistent flooding in New Brunswick, massive flooding in Quebec, major apartment fires in Ontario and Nunavut, flooding of vast areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, this week's wild fires in parts of Alberta and possible flooding in BC means the Red Cross needs the steadfast support of Canadians and corporate partners to meet the challenge head on.
Today, Walmart Canada donated $100,000 in gift cards to the Canadian Red Cross as well as set up an online fundraising campaign on Walmart.ca to help families in need following the Slave Lake, Alberta fires and the flooding around Brandon, Manitoba and in Southern Quebec. These new funds are in addition to the more than $3 million Walmart Canada donated and raised to the Canadian Red Cross for disaster relief in 2010.
"Since 2003, the Canadian Red Cross has relied on Walmart as a steadfast partner in responding to disasters of all scales," said Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO at the Canadian Red Cross. "Walmart Canada remains the Red Cross' largest corporate donor and we greatly appreciate their quick and unwavering support."
"Walmart Canada is proud to play a pivotal role in providing urgently needed support when disaster strikes," said David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Walmart Canada. "We are always standing by, ready to assist the Canadian Red Cross to ensure Canadians get the help they need when they need it the most."
Walmart Canada's support means when families or entire communities are impacted by natural disaster or other emergencies, the network of over 25,000 highly trained Canadian Red Cross volunteers can respond immediately. The range of services include reuniting families separated by the disaster, emotional support, and lodging. Walmart's sponsorship also helps provide the Red Cross with emergency supplies such as blankets, food, clothing, water, hygiene kits (toothbrushes, soap and other toiletries), and Walmart employee volunteers. Including its annual month-long fundraiser last August, to date, Walmart Canada has donated and raised nearly $16 million to the Canadian Red Cross.
All Canadian Red Cross assistance is provided free of charge thanks to government funding, financial support from individuals, organizations and community-minded corporate donors such as Walmart.
